Social media-ready environments invite attendees to engage and contribute, transforming passive viewers into invested participants.

Social media-ready environments invite attendees to engage and contribute, transforming passive viewers into invested participants.

Building in moments for interaction and content creation into the exhibit design helps incentivize attendees to slow down and invest more of their time. Prioritizing user-generated content (UGC) offers a strong strategy for turning audience participation into valuable assets that drive organic social buzz and community engagement.

The Importance of User-Generated Content (UGC) in Exhibit Design

Attendee participation is a powerful source of social proof when shared on social platforms. The organic nature of UGC captured during an experience performs particularly well because it provides an authentic look at a brand from the audience's perspective. When a brand shares UGC from attendees during or after an experience, it strengthens brand loyalty and makes attendees feel part of the experience.

How to Measure the Impact of Social Engagement

Measuring the impact of engagement starts with a clearly defined social strategy and goals. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative metrics helps evaluate success and determine how the results align with a brand’s objectives. Key metrics for measuring UGC engagement:

  • Volume of UGC posts: A high volume of posts generally indicates how successful a campaign is at motivating audiences to participate.

  • Number of unique creators: A large number of creators indicates not just popularity but also the breadth of engagement and the number of distinct users the content reached.

  • Engagement rate: Engagement rates (likes, comments, shares, and saves) tend to reflect short-term activity and are valuable when evaluated alongside other metrics to understand overall impact.

  • Comments per post: Comments provide a direct window into customer feedback and the overall tone of UGC engagement. While likes and shares may show higher numbers, comments offer deeper insight and higher-quality information into the customer perspective.

  • Shares and reposts: Shares and reposts indicate the relatability and tenor of the content for the user. Reshared content demonstrates what people find interesting enough to amplify in agreement.

  • Reach and impressions: Reach and impression data shows how far the UGC extends past the experience and typical brand audience.

  • Sentiment tracking: Sentiment (positive, neutral, negative) provides insight into how the public feels about the brand message being shared.

  • Repeat participation from creators: Repeat participation reflects sustained engagement over time, indicating that the experience or brand continues to resonate beyond the initial impression.

5 Tips to Turn Social Moments into Lasting Brand Connections

Try the following tips to turn user-generated content into a meaningful resource for your brand.

Design exhibits around interaction

Incorporate elements into the exhibit design that invite people to engage with the experience. At AAOS, Zimmer Biomet's exhibit offered hospitality and private labs that simulated a futuristic operating room. In the labs, attending surgeons had the opportunity to participate in hands-on demos of Zimmer Biomet’s latest technology with a variety of applications. Keeping engagement in mind from the beginning will help center interactions over passive viewing. A beautifully designed experience will draw the attendee in, and immersive elements allow a deeper connection.

Embed shareable moments into the build

Striking visuals, lighting, and tactile moments all encourage photo and video capture. Branded lawn games for family environments, like Corteva's experience at Farm Progress, offer fun opportunities to capture content using brand logos or event hashtags.

Incentivize participation with giveaways or contests

Having a piece of the experience for attendees to take with them opens up content opportunities even after the event. Hamilton’s activation at EXHIBITORLIVE 2025 used a QR code that guests could scan to create personalized, gold-foiled leather goods featuring the Hamilton logo and connecting to the message ‘Be Remembered’. Each piece was made on-site by local professional artists and provided attendees with a unique keepsake to take home.

Showcase attendee content within the exhibit

Displaying real-time user-generated content on screens shows how to participate and demonstrate an active community presence. Content created during the experience serves as valuable social media material to support re-engagement after the event.

Facilitate personal and emotional connections

Showcase moments that help attendees create memories through storytelling or personal connection. Cornerstone Building Brands hosted a meet-and-greet with HGTV personalities Dave and Jenny Marrs, brand ambassadors for Cornerstone’s Mastic™ Siding & Accessories. Activations featuring influencers or brand supporters motivate guests to take photos and videos and to reshare them across their personal platforms.
